According to Marton Marosszeky, the challenge for the construction industry is to change the rules of the game in order to become more competitive and less adversarial. Professor Marosszeky threw down this challenge during his keynote address at APP Corporation's company conference in May 2003 .
APP, an Associate Member of the ACCI, has grown from a pure project management company to one of Australia's leading professional services firms specialising in project management, property, events, technology and management consulting within 12 years.
Professor Marosszeky suggested that while project teams work within the existing adversarial paradigm, the rules of the existing game, the current operating framework of the sector limit their achievements. The rules of the overall game are often sub optimal and Professor Marosszeky contends it is up to companies like APP to take the initiative and to change the basic operating framework, creating super productive project environments that lead to extraordinary outcomes. This requires managing upward as well as downward.
