Experience

34 years as a structural engineer, contractor, contract administrator and academic in the NSW construction industry. Last 17 years as a researcher and research leader studying aspects of construction management and technology.

Former National President of the Project Managers Forum of Australia. Currently, Chair of the NSW Construction Industry Consultative Committee, the peak industry body for labour related issues in NSW. A Director of Construction Information Systems Pty Ltd (publisher of Natspec), a Director of the Building Science Forum (NSW) Pty Ltd and former Board member of the Structures Standards Board, Standards Australia.

Member of past national working parties on construction research policy, research priorities, export of construction services and performance measurement of construction processes. Also past chair of the standards committee for Tolerances in Construction.

Research Projects and Achievements

Has attracted more than $3.5 million in research funding, >$1.2 million through state and national competitive grants. More than 130 publications, of which 33 are refereed and a further 30 are substantive research reports.

Main research interests are in construction process management and technical innovation. This is reflected in current and recent projects studying quality, waste and safety management, IT implementation and performance measurement and benchmarking.

Teaching and writing have bridged management and technology; including work in ethics, development of construction technology, innovation in construction; through to construction project and process management and material technology.

Presented university courses on ethics, TQM, value management, history of urban development, materials technology, structural design, demolition and the nature of technological change in the construction process.

Commercial Experience

Advice given at the most senior level to international manufacturers regarding the future direction of construction materials and technology and re-engineering of construction processes.

Led numerous projects advising on the condition and repair of major items of infrastructure and large buildings. Commercial experience includes wharves and bridges, the residential, commercial and infrastructure sectors. It includes structures such as the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

Has studied innovation in techniques and procurement processes internationally for 20 years and been invited to speak internationally on the theme. Has led research groups that have developed a number of significant innovations in the areas of concrete repair technology and novel construction systems and processes in concrete and timber. Also has considerable experience in the evaluation of new products and construction systems.

Experience with construction process improvement, construction technology, automation and supply chain redesign. Is an adviser in the implementation of Lean Construction practices.

Is a commercial mediator and negotiator with experience in over 50 commercial disputes, also teaching short courses in negotiation and mediation. Has extensive experience in the forensic investigation of damaged buildings and in the expert determination of disputes.
