Experience

11 years of industry experience prior to becoming engaged in research in 1993.

Construction and project management of large projects including steel mills, port, power station (civil works), irrigation infrastructure, and flood protection works.

Research interests in construction management include performance measurement and benchmarking, management of quality, application of information technology, minimisation of waste, and innovation in housing construction.

Research Projects and Achievements
  • Housing Innovation Project - investigation of local and overseas innovations with potential of cost efficiencies for affordable housing in Australia. Project outcomes include a web based database of housing innovations and recommendation of strategies for affordable housing
  • Minimisation of solid waste in construction - study of waste streams as well as behaviour of construction workers in relation to generation of waste. Project outcomes include training package for construction workers, handbook for training of supervisors, guidelines for minimising waste in commercial construction
  • Performance Measurement and Benchmarking - development of Key Performance Indicators for consultants, contractors, and subcontractors
  • Information Technology in Australian Construction Industry - Study of current state of application of IT, identification of barriers to implementation, and recommendations for IT implementation to achieve competitive advantage. Outcomes include report for the Department of Industry, Science and Resources
  • ISO 9000 and Quality in Construction - Investigation of the efficacy of ISO 9000 in achieving the desired quality objectives in construction
